The town square, called a zocolo, is a central gathering place for the locals with games, music and conversation. There are a wonderful variety of shops and restaurants surrounding the zocolo. The local fishermen will be nearby, selling their catch of the day.
The government has declared the reef area and the mangroves in Puerto Morelos ecological preserves, creating one of the best-preserved areas in the Riviera Maya. Their intent is to minimize development and keep the small town flavor of this charming village. The mangroves are an ecosystem and home to hundreds of species of wildlife, while protecting the shoreline with distinct root systems.
